How to do things with Romance: a prologue

With a spectrum of feelings such as passion, affinity, affection, tenderness, empathy, compassion and devotion, romance is treasured in many forms of artistic expressions. How to do things with Romance: a prologue is a willful throw off balance to wrestle the meaning of romance and perform it anew. It is a dance where big jumps become a team sport in an attempt to propose and speculate in other interpretations of the romantic. Welcome to a sporty, riot-girrrl inspired punk ballet!

What if we shift the question from ‘who do I want to be?’ to the question, ‘what kind of life do I want to live with others? / Judith Butler Understanding dance as a continuous negotiation between historical, collective and personal habits, norms, and desires, her question felt like an important, impracticable but inspiring starting point for a dance by many. It became clear that to support, submit to, and care for a proposal and to fill the verb” following” with agency was important. It started with questioning not the form dance takes, but for what reasons and what dance’s purposes potentially could be. This, out of the ambition to not take any purpose for granted.

RUDY is a piece for which no dances were innovated, it is a recycled (or transcycled) piece. It is a piece for activation of dear dance memories and histories both personal and other ones, found on the internet or so. Taken out of contexts, transcycled and collided with other ones they are compiled to a new oneness. The separate dances constitute a new whole that make altered meanings appear, open for other readings and different understandings. In the transformative recycling of dances that already exist we take care of old dances, follow and support them, become vessels for them, aiming to reclaim creativity to also be about collectivity, togetherness, imitation, “poor” imitation, following, empathy and supporting.

Attempting to up value caretaking. This piece considers participation and partaking as authoring and constituting. Out of this view on creativity as collective RUDY proposes a calm moment in which empathy, care, repeating and bastardizing imitation are considered valuable aspects of art.

Utifrån en förståelse för dans som en pågående förhandling mellan historiska, kollektiva och individuella vanor, normer och begär, framstod Butlers fråga som en viktig, omöjlig men inspirerande utgångspunkt för en dans av många. Det blev tydligt att ta hand om, hänge sig åt och stötta förslag och idéer, samt att fylla verbet “följa” med agens var viktigt. Det började med ett ifrågasättande inte av hur dans tar form, utan utifrån vilka anledningar och vad dess potentiella syften kan vara. Det, utifrån ambitionen att inte ta något syfte förgivet.

I den här föreställningen återupplivas individuella danshistorier, -drömmar och -minnen, för att kollidera med andras och konstituera en ny helhet. Tagna ut ur sina kontexter utgör de separata danserna en helhet som bär eller föreslår andra betydelser, förståelser och upplevelser. Utifrån en syn på kreativitet som kollektiv föreslår RUDY en lugn stund där empati, omtanke, följande, stöttande, upprepande och förvrängd imitation anses vara värdefulla aspekter av konst.

How to do things with Romance: a prologue kastar sig ut i en dans där balettens stora hopp blir en lagsport i ett försök att föreslå och spekulera i olika uttolkningar av det romantiska. Verket vill brottas med betydelsen av romantik för att föreställa den igen. Välkommen till en sportig, riot-grrrl inspirerad punkbalett.
